Premium vs low-cost medical tourism: why price shouldn't be your only criterion

On Google, a "hair transplant Turkey" search returns quotes ranging from €990 to €4,500 for the same procedure. A 1-to-4 spread for the same operation, in the same country. What lies behind this gap? And abo

What discount operators sacrifice to hit their prices

Offering a hair transplant at €990 in Turkey with accommodation and transfers included is mathematically impossible without compressing costs somewhere. Here's where that compression happens — and what it means for you.

The surgeon is replaced by technicians

In the high-volume discount model, the surgeon often only steps in for the channel-incision phase — the minimum legal medical act. Graft extraction and implantation — which represent 80% of procedure time and determine the result — are performed by non-medical technicians, less well paid, working on several patients simultaneously. The outcome is mechanically inferior, even with the best equipment.

Volume takes priority over precision

A profitable discount model requires treating as many patients as possible per day. That volume pushes each step to accelerate — extraction too rapid that damages follicles, time outside the scalp too long, rushed implantation that compromises the natural angle. These shortcuts are invisible during the procedure. They become visible at 12 months, when graft survival turns out to be disappointing.

Post-operative follow-up is non-existent

For a discount operator, the mission ends when you leave the clinic. No dedicated coordinator, no teleconsultation, no structured photographic follow-up. If you return to Belgium with a complication or a 6-month intermediate result that worries you, you handle it alone — or you pay for a consultation with a local doctor who doesn't know your file.

Red flags you shouldn't ignore

  • Quote sent without a prior medical consultation — how can they recommend a technique without having assessed your profile?
  • Graft count guaranteed in advance without having seen your photos — that's a sales promise, not a medical one.
  • No surgeon name in the contract — if they don't tell you who operates, there's a reason.
  • "All-inclusive" price abnormally low (below €1,500 for a full transplant) — something is necessarily being compressed.
  • No information on post-operative follow-up — the result is judged at 12 months, not when you leave the clinic.
  • Exclusively positive testimonials with no real 12-month result photos — before/after at D+15 shows nothing.
  • Sales pressure to book fast with a "limited offer" — good surgeons don't need flash promotions.

The real question: what does a bad transplant cost?

A patient who chooses a discount operator and ends up with a disappointing result — 60% graft survival, insufficient density, irregular hairline — has two options. Accept the result, or pay for a second procedure to correct it. And a hair revision is always more complicated and costlier than the initial procedure: the donor area is partially depleted, tissues are scarred, options are reduced. In other words: saving €1,500 on the first procedure can cost €4,000 to €6,000 in corrections two years later — not counting two years of frustration and a donor area permanently partially compromised.

The full calculation

The true cost of a hair transplant is not measured by the initial quote. It is measured by the 12-month result — and by the total cost if a revision becomes necessary. On that basis, choosing a premium operator becomes an economically rational decision.

Premium doesn't mean out of reach

At Zynea, premium does not mean out of reach. It means every euro you spend goes to the right place: to the surgeon, the protocol, the follow-up, and the support — not to referral commissions or aggressive advertising campaigns. Our rates are transparent, detailed, and justified. They cover everything that determines your outcome and your safety. And they remain significantly lower than the cost of the same quality of care in Belgium or France. What Zynea does not do: promise the lowest price to win your trust, then disappoint on quality. What Zynea does: offer you the best possible result at the fair price for that level of excellence. The difference is fundamental — and it shows at 12 months.

Compare for yourself — for free. Zynea initial consultation: medical consultation, treatment plan, and detailed quote within 48 hours. No commitment. Ask us your hardest questions. That's what it's for.
